Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage found in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts found indicate that they were inhabiting the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't described till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot bigger area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen improved development in the past several years.
