Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found near the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were dwelling in the local area most probably from the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a far greater area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
