Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a history stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on near by offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the locale in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a much wider area than just the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the following generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that's seen increased development in the past few decades.
