Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed imply that they were living in the area in all probability since the sixth century. The village as such is not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a far bigger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the following decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's witnessed increased development in the last few years.
