Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage discovered near by offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in around the tenth century, and relics uncovered mean that they were residing in the area possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't listed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot larger area compared to the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has witnessed increased development in modern times.
