Positioned within the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on reveal that they were settling the region most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't described till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a considerably larger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the ensuing years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen accelerated development in modern times.
