Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity perhaps from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time was not reported until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way wider area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get included up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen accelerated development in the past several years.
