The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far larger area compared to the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
