Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon near by offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood possibly from the sixth century. The village as such was not documented until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a substantially larger area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the following years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen accelerated development in modern times.
