Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found reveal that they were staying in the neighbourhood very likely from the 6th Century. The village existing then was not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a substantially greater area compared to the town itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put in up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen improved development in the past several years.
