Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated near the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were residing in the area most probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a considerably wider area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
