Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found very close to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins discovered in the area offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were settling the locale most probably since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't cited until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a substantially larger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
