Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage uncovered in the area give proof of this. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who created the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts found denote that they were inhabiting the local area more than likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time wasn't cited till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a substantially wider area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming decades and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed improved development in recent times.
