Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it sits near the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were inhabiting the region most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then isn't observed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a substantially wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
