Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies very close to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins picked up nearby give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were settling the locale in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a way larger area than just the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put in up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen improved development in the last few years.
