Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were inhabiting the locale almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't reported until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a way larger area than simply the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen increased development in modern times.
