The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a far greater area than just the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
