Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the locale most likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time was not observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a far wider area than simply the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the following years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in recent times.
