Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage unearthed in the area offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts found show that they were living in the locale probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not documented until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a substantially bigger area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen improved development in the last few years.
