Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies next to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins uncovered in the area give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were settling the local area possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a much wider area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the coming decades and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen increased development in recent years.
