Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were staying in the neighbourhood very likely from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a considerably wider area than simply the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that's witnessed increased development in current times.
