Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to the times of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins picked up nearby give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood probably from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a much bigger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the coming generations and the construction of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
