Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past harping back to Roman times, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins found near by offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and relics picked up denote that they were living in the region possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not described until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a much greater area than just the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get applied before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
