Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the vicinity most probably from the sixth century. The village as such is not listed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far greater area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
