Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage found nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts found mean that they were inhabiting the local area probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not cited until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing years and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in modern times.
