Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage uncovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities discovered denote that they were settling the local area in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a substantially larger area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that's witnessed improved development in the recent past.
