Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins picked up nearby give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were residing in the vicinity more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a much larger area than only the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the succeeding years and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that has seen improved development in the past several years.
