Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the vicinity most probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a way greater area than merely the town alone, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get inserted up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
