Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered reveal that they were residing in the local area undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't inserted prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the ensuing years and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
