Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered in the area show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market in about the tenth century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were settling the local area quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a much wider area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that has seen increased development in recent times.
