Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't discussed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a considerably greater area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
