Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins found in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were dwelling in the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune as such was not mentioned until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a significantly larger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
