Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed mean that they were settling the area undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a significantly wider area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be included up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the coming generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
