Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to 37,000 and a story going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the vicinity more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such is not mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a considerably wider area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put in prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
