Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered denote that they were residing in the locale in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune existing then wasn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a far larger area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
