Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage unearthed nearby offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon suggest that they were staying in the locale quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time was not documented until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a significantly bigger area than only the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the succeeding generations and the development of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
