Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage found nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed mean that they were dwelling in the locale very likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a much wider area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen greater development in the last few years.
