Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins picked up in the area show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were residing in the area most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a much wider area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
