Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Found in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up reveal that they were settling the vicinity undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a way bigger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get appended till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
