Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered reveal that they were inhabiting the region quite likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a lot bigger area than just the town itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
