Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins unearthed near by show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the local area most likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a much wider area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name might possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town that's witnessed increased development in the past few years.
