Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't described till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot wider area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the ensuing years and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
