Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled on in the area give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a considerably bigger area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has seen greater development in the past few years.
