Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were settling the region in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way bigger area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the following years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
