Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins found near by offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were dwelling in the area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not reported till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way greater area than simply the town itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
