Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage found in close proximity give proof of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were residing in the region perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune as such was not discussed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a lot bigger area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the following generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
