Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were dwelling in the area quite likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a much greater area than just the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get applied up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the coming decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen increased development in modern times.
