Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage found nearby give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered indicate that they were dwelling in the region most likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was is not observed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a considerably larger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen accelerated development in recent times.
