Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins picked up near by show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and relics found denote that they were settling the area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not cited till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a way bigger area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
