Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the local area possibly since the sixth century. The village existing then is not described till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly larger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
