The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins picked up nearby show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were living in the locale more than likely since the sixth century. The village existing then isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a much wider area than simply the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get applied up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the following years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
