Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins stumbled upon in the area give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were inhabiting the area most likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot larger area than only the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's seen greater development in recent times.
