Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were residing in the area most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not listed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a far wider area than only the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
