The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a considerably wider area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not applied until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
