Found in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were settling the locale most likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's witnessed increased development in current times.
