Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled on nearby offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the area possibly from the sixth century. The village existing at this time isn't remarked upon till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a considerably bigger area than merely the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get applied before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
