Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins discovered near by give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were residing in the area perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a far larger area than just the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get applied until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen improved development in the past few years.
