Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were residing in the vicinity most probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not described till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a much greater area compared to the town itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't inserted up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the following generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
