Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a history harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed very close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage discovered near by show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were dwelling in the locale undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a way bigger area compared to the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the building of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand.
