Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood very likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a considerably bigger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming years and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's witnessed greater development in recent years.
