Positioned within the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage discovered nearby show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were inhabiting the region undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot bigger area than merely the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
