Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a historical past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage picked up in the area give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were residing in the locale very likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot larger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
