The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the local area quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a lot larger area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
