Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on indicate that they were dwelling in the region in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not observed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a much wider area than only the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be included prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has seen greater development in recent times.
