Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins discovered near by offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a much wider area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could perhaps have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the following decades and the development of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
