Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins uncovered nearby give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were inhabiting the local area very likely since the sixth century. The commune existing then isn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially wider area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't included until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town which has seen improved development in current times.
