Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the local area possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't listed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the coming years and the development of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed increased development in recent years.
