Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins unearthed in the area give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a substantially larger area than merely the town by itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's seen greater development in recent years.
