Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands very close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were settling the local area possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not referred to till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a way bigger area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the following decades and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has seen improved development in the past few years.
