Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a far bigger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be inserted prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen greater development in the recent past.
