Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins discovered nearby show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were settling the region perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not described till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a considerably bigger area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's witnessed increased development in the past several years.
