Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to Roman times, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage found in the area offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed mean that they were residing in the local area most probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a much bigger area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the coming generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop.
