Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon suggest that they were dwelling in the region probably since the sixth century. The village as such isn't observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a far bigger area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in modern times.
