Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins discovered nearby give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not listed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the coming years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
